A Whale
of a Tale

Come have a Whale of a Tale experience with the Virginia Beach Aquarium's whale tours. "Here's a chance to see some of the most magnificent creatures on Earth in their natural habitat! Whale watchers will search for humpback and fin whales off the coast of Virginia Beach. Each excursion is narrated by a trained Aquarium Educator while ex-perienced volunteers show artifacts and answer questions". Whales are NOT guaranteed to be sighted. Trip includes transportation, trip lead-ers and whale boat tour.

CLINIC: Intro to Skiing and Snowboarding

                                                                                                                                                              Drop in for an introductory clinic on skiing ans snowboarding before the big trip on Saturday! Trip leaders will introduce participants to the sport and provide some advance tips as well. There will be time for questions ans answers and even a roundtable discussion for participants that have info on the latest moves! Clinic held in the Perry library in room 151.

Join the Student Activities Council and the Outdoor Adventure Program for a co-sponsored trip to the slopes! We will travel to Wintergreen for a day of skiing and snowboarding. Trip price in-cludes lift tickets, ski rentals ( snowboard rentals are additional costs), charter bus transportation and trip leaders. Sign up starting January 12th to reserve your spot!

Winter Wonderland Day Hike

Break out of cabin fever and head outside with OAP! Join us for a day hike at Crabtree Falls near Charlottesville, Virginia. This de-manding 5 mile loop features cascading waterfalls offering the pos-sibility of frozen falls during this winter day hike. The fall is said to be the tallest east of the Mississippi! Don't miss out on the great winter get away!

That's right, we're headed to sunny (keep your fingers crossed) Florida for Spring Break. The week includes a three day, two night sea kayak adven-ture, snorkeling, sailing and beach combing. Trip includes trip leaders, vans, transportation, group camping equipment, food for 6 days, camping fees, equipment and fun!

Hike &Camp at Old Rag

Old Rag Mountain is a famous hike within Virginia, featuring tremendous views, switch backs, and scrambling over boulders. The mountain top views are well worth the hike! We'll be camping out the night before at a nearby campground so we can hit the trail early. Bring your camera! Trip includes trip leaders, transportation and group camping equipment.

CLINIC: Dutch Oven Cooking

Learn how to Dutch Oven Cook and enjoy some delicious food at the same time. Spaces are limited, so sign up at the Recreational Sports Office by Tuesday, March 24 at noon. Clinic includes instruction, recipes, and food sampling. 

Wilderness Backpacking

April 3 - 5

St. Mary's Wilderness area is the largest wilderness area in Virginia and is located in the Blue Ridge Mountains. This weekend of backpacking explores the elevations ranging from 1, 700 feet to 3, 400 feet and includes the drain-ages of Cellar Hollow, Spy Run, and the upper part of the Saint Mary's River. Along the Saint Mary's there are ponds of native trout, trails lined with rhododendron and mountain laurel, and a lovely waterfall waiting to be discovered. Trip includes trip leaders, transportation, group camping equipment and participant backpack.

Mountain Biking

April 12

Pump up your tires because we're headed out for a day of mountain biking. Trip includes bikes (or bring your own), transportation, park fees, and trip leaders.

Shenandoah River Canoe & Camping

April 17 - 19

Grab your paddle because we're headed down the river! This trip com-bines camping and canoeing on the Shenandoah River. Participants will cover over twenty miles of the river (dependent on weather), see the Shenandoah Valley from a new perspective, and set up a primitive camp along the banks of the river! Trip includes trip leaders, transportation, group camping equipment and canoes.

 Clinic: Kayak 101

April 24

Stop by the Whitehurst Beach for your try at Kayaking! Trip leaders will be on hand to provide instruction during the afternoon.

Kayak to the Zoo

April 26

Lions and Tigers and Bears Oh My! This adventure launches from ODU's very own Whitehurst Beach on campus and includes a 10 mile round-trip paddle to the Virginia Zoo in Norfolk. Trip participants travel down the La-fayette River to the adjacent park for a picnic lunch. Enjoy the day on the water and experience Norfolk from a water view! Trip includes kayak, pad-dle, life jacket, and trip leaders.

 
 

Trip Registration and Requirements

 All Outdoor Adventure Program (OAP) Trips are open to current ODU students, faculty, and staff.   All Trips require registration prior to the Mandatory Pre-trip Meetings.   Trips that do not have Pre-trip Meetings have a registration deadline of 12:00 PM on the day of the trip.   You can register for any trip at the Recreational Sports Office located at 1015 W. 47th Street between the hours of 8:00 AM - 5:00 PM Monday through Friday. 

 

When registering you must bring the following:

Valid ODU ID

Health insurance card (with company name and policy number)

Payment

 

Payment must be made at the time of registration and can be made with cash or check.  Spaces are limited and are first come, first serve.  Registration for all trips opens at the beginning of each semester.

Cancellation / Refund Policies  If the Outdoor Adventure Program cancels the trip due to weather, lack of participants, or other circumstances, the participant will receive a full refund.  If a participant cancels registration and a replacement is provided prior to the Pre-trip Meeting, a refund will be given.  After the Pre-trip Meeting, no refunds will be given and replacements cannot be made.  Trips without a Pre-trip Meeting will be given a refund if a replacement is provided.  (The OAP will refer to the trip waitlist to assist in finding replacements.) 
Pre-trip Meetings  Pre-trip Meetings are mandatory for certain activities.  Information is shared at these meetings that is important for your enjoyment and safety on the trip.  If you cannot attend a Pre-trip meeting, you are responsible for contacting the trip leader and arranging for another meeting time prior to the scheduled Pre-trip Meeting.

Skill Level

 
 Each OAP trip is assigned a Skill Level.  There are three Skill Levels, Beginner, Intermediate, and Advance. 

Beginner - No prior experience is necessary and low to moderate physical activity is expected.

Intermediate - Prior experience in the activity is strongly recommended and moderate to strenuous physical activity is expected.

Advanced - Prior experience in the activity is required and strenuous physical activity is expected.

Equipment  OAP will provide basic group equipment for trips.  Participants will be responsible for providing their own personal equipment and food.  Further information will be provided at the Pre-trip Meeting or can be requested prior to the meeting by contacting the trip leader at the Recreational Sports Office.   Transportation is provided for all trips as well as student trip leaders.
