Barbara Jordan Community Service Award
Barbara Jordan (1936-1996), an African American female, was elected to the United States Senate after serving in the Texas State Legislature. Ms. Jordan received her LL.B Degree from Boston University, and during her distinguished career was awarded over 27 honorary degrees. She was selected numerous times for the "One of the 25 Most Influential Women in America" by the World Almanac. The benchmark of Ms. Jordan's career occurred in 1976, when she gave the Keynote Address at the 1976 Democratic National Convention. Ms. Jordan paved the way for many African Americans to achieve success in various areas, including the political arena. It is in recognition of her contributions that we have created this award. The Barbara Jordan Community Service Award recognizes a student who has had a positive impact on the African American community through service.
