Japan Disaster Relief
On March 11, a 9.0 magnitude earthquake and subsequent tsunami struck Northern Japan. Close to 4,000 people are reported dead and over 6,700 are missing. A deepening crisis at a damaged nuclear power plant and cold temperatures are adding to the impact of the disaster and expectation that the death toll will rise. In response, the Center for Service and Civic Engagement is encouraging anyone able in the University Community to send monetary donations to a relief agency. For a list of agencies currently accepting donations, please visit:

Please keep in mind the following tips when considering where to donate your money:
· Choose a well established agency that has done previous work in Japan and/or disaster torn areas.
· Avoid telemarketers and email solicitations.
· Seek out a charity's official website and donate directly.
· Designate your gift to ensure that it goes where you want it to go.

According to information received by the Center for Service & Civic Engagement there are currently no local/national agencies that are accepting USED clothing and/or canned goods. Additionally, no unskilled labor is currently needed in Japan. Nurses or physicians, especially those with trauma experience, can contact the International Medical Corps (http://www.imcworldwide.org/Page.aspx?pid=183) to offer their services.
The Center for Service & Civic Engagement is staying informed on the latest needs coming out of Japan. As new needs arise, the Center will respond to those needs by posting a call for donations to University Announcements. For more information, please contact the Center for Service and Civic Engagement by e-mail volunteer@odu.edu or calling 683-6948.
