Monarch Mentors

International Student & Scholar Services (ISSS) is seeking vibrant and enthusiastic students at the GRADUATE and UNDERGRADUATE levels with Monarch pride who are interested in assisting newly arrived international students with their adjustment to the ODU community.

Why should you be a Monarch Mentor?

  • Enhance your résumé.
  • Put a "face" on other countries and cultures.
  • Make new friends.
  • Give back to the community.
  • Free food and a t-shirt!

What is the commitment?

  • International Student Orientation--icebreakers, campus tours, etc.
  • Keeping in touch with Mentees during fall semester--inviting them to activities on- and/or off-campus, meeting up once or twice a month for coffee or lunch, etc.
  • Training session for Mentors--communication skills, info on how to help new international students
  • Assisting ISSS with checking in new students in Webb Center (see application for dates and times help is needed)--be the first person to meet new students; help out with photocopying, house searches, finding department advisors, questions about forms new students need to fill out, etc.; this is optional (but very much appreciated!)
