GENERAL REMINDERS & ANNOUNCEMENTS

5 June 2006

Reminder Regarding E-Mails, Advisors & Appointments:  Got a question for ISSS? Here are some reminders about getting answers as quickly as possible.

Your First Step:  Often, students come to Dragas with questions that could have been answered via an e-mail to ISSS or they learn that a form is needed to complete a process.  We are happy to answer questions but also realize that your time is valuable and want to get you information as efficiently as possible.  E-mailing us before you come to the office means that we can point you to a URL or form, making only one trip to Dragas necessary for you to drop off the paperwork, thus saving you time.

Advisors:  As you know, we implemented a system this semester in which each advisor took a specific section of the alphabet for paperwork processing (based on the family name of the student and for certain procedures), as noted below:

Sara Eser:  A-H and all J visa paperwork
Robbin Fulmore:  I-P and all ODU H & PR paperwork
Freida Brocklebank:  Q-Z and all CPT paperwork

We realize some of you may have worked with a specific advisor on other occasions and would prefer to keep working with her now; this is not a problem at all  Just be sure you tell that advisor so she can ensure anything submitted by you is given directly to the correct advisor.

Below are some examples of when you should make an appointment.

  • change of visa status
  • adding a dependent to a  visa document (or deleting from)
  • emergency loan/ unforeseen financial issues
  • homesickness or other adjustment issues
  • reinstatement of visa status/ violation of visa status
  • anything you feel will involve more than just one or two questions--that way, we can sit down and really discuss your situation in detail during time set aside especially for you

Items for Sale & Housing Message Boards:  The message boards on our web site for selling items and housing are still out of order.  They are being worked on but, for the time being, we don't have the ability to post.  If you'd like to e-mail your ads to us, we can make the available to anyone who comes in and/or e-mail the info out daily in one combined e-mail.  Hopefully, this won't be an issue for very much longer.  Sorry for the inconvenience...this is an unavoidable technical glitch.

Dragas Closing:  Dragas will be closed from 12 until 1:30 on Thursday, 8 June.

Office Survey--Participate and Win $100!:  The survey about ISSS' services will only be up a bit longer.  Please visit the site to let us know about how we can improve our services--it only takes five minutes to complete.  The survey is anonymous but those wishing to give their UIN will be entered into two drawings for $100 gift certificates to Barnes & Noble.

CPT Q & A Express:  Besides I-9 paperwork and insurance, Curricular Practical Training (CPT) for F-1s is one of the most common reasons students stop by Dragas.  We are trying something new that we hope will help you get the answers you want as quickly as possible:  CPT Q & A Express.  Mondays & Wednesdays:  10:00-11:30 and Thursdays & Fridays:  1:30-3:00.  Stop by during these times set aside especially for answering your questions regarding internships.

Attention Undergraduate Students:  If you have completed 58 credits in your program, you are eligible to take the exit exam.  We have seen a couple of students run into problems with their immigration status because of delays in doing this; therefore, to avoid potential headaches, we suggest you get the requirement out of the way as soon as possible.
