GENERAL UPDATES & REMINDERS

18 January 2008

Taking a Reduced Courseload in Spring '08?:  If you are a graduate student taking less than 9 credits or an undergraduate student taking less than 12 credits, remember that you must submit the Reduced Courseload Request form to ISSS before the end of registration on 22 January.  You will receive an e-mail response that you should save along with your I-20s or DS-2019s because they document your visa status compliance.

Employment Paperwork (I-9) Processing Hours:  Please take note of the I-9 Processing Hours posted on our web siteNEW PROCEDURES FOR I-9 HOURS:  Please arrive on the half hour (e.g. 10, 10:30, 11, or 11:30 for MWF) and sign in on both the special I-9 sign-in and the regular pink sheet.  If you have any questions about I-9s, just ask!

University Closed:  In observance of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, ODU will be closed Saturday, Sunday and Monday.  All offices will re-open on Tuesday at 8:00 a.m.  That same day, there will be a lecture here on the campus in honor of Dr. King.

What's the Status of Your Status?:  Are you an F-1 or J-1 visa holder?  Have made all of the updates you need?  Have you submitted all of the forms you need?  Want to be sure you are maintaining your status?  Visit our new page to help you the sometimes very confusing maze of law, policies and procedures--better yet, bookmark it!

Leadership Opportunities:  We hope you take advantage of the following leadership opportunities.  UNDERGRADS:  Don't forget that if you have already earned 12 credits at ODU, are not receiving a tuition reduction and have exhibited leadership and involvement (like these opportunities) on- or off-campus, you may be eligible for the $5000 International Student Leadership Award.  Stay tuned for full info and application in the next month or so.

ODU Alerts:  With the wintry weather and SNOW coming Saturday (!!), it's a good opportunity to remind students to sign up for ODU Alerts (a Featured Site on the left side when you click on this link) and/or to keep an eye on your ODU e-mail for potential closings--be it nasty weather or a dangerous situation.  Although we certainly hope we never have to use it, this system was created last year after the tragedy at Virginia Tech to ensure students' safety.  Local TV stations will also have information.  (It is very rare that we close for weather...so, be prepared for school on Tuesday!)

MANY WISHES FOR A SUCCESSFUL SEMESTER,
AS WELL AS A HAPPY AND HEALTHY 2008!
