Subject: H1N1 (Swine) Flu Vaccine
Flu is currently widespread in Virginia and most of the U.S. with the majority of tested isolates being the H1N1 strain. We have continued to see some influenza like illness among Old Dominion University students each week since the start of classes, but numbers have remained comparatively steady.
Since the H1N1 virus is disproportionately affecting children and young adults, getting vaccinated is an important prevention measure that could reduce the amount of illness on campus this year. Many college students are in the priority age group to get the vaccine (through age 24).
The ODU Student Health Services Center is still waiting for our first shipment of H1N1 vaccine to arrive. We are TENTATIVELY planning to hold our first large vaccine clinic for Thursday, Oct. 29 from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. in the ODU Student Recreational Center, located at Powhatan Avenue and 48th Street.
We will post a notice to confirm or cancel the clinic the morning of Wednesday, Oct. 28 on our web site at http://studentaffairs.odu.edu/healthservices. This clinic date is contingent upon receipt of the vaccine in a timely manner. Hours may also be modified, depending on the size of the shipment we receive.
Other TENTATIVE dates for subsequent clinics are: Wednesday, Nov. 4 and Tuesday, Nov. 10 (pending availability of vaccine.)
Students are reminded that they will need a valid student ID to receive an H1N1 flu shot.
