Things to Know


Patient Rights and Responsibilities

The goal of Student Health Services is to provide all patients with high quality health care in a manner that clearly recognizes the need and rights of the individual. Therefore, the patient shall have the right:

  • to be treated with respect and dignity;
  • to confidentiality of all records and services rendered, to the extent provided by law;
  • to privacy during examinations, treatments, discussions, and consultation of their health care;
  • to be given adequate instructions for self care, including diet, exercise, medication, and follow-up care with health center personnel;
  • to be given adequate explanation about medical procedures to include all possible risks, consequences, and benefits in a timely manner;
  • to participate in decisions pertaining to their health care;
  • to refuse to be examined or treated by health care practitioners and to be informed of the consequences of such a decision;
  • to information concerning:
    • a) their rights and responsibilities as patients;
    • b) available services;
    • c) provision for after-hours and emergency coverage;
    • d) health fees;
    • e) information contained in their medical record;
    • to communicate any violation of these principles to Student Health Services administration.

Patients' Responsibilities
In order that Student Health Services can be most effective, the patient and health care practitioner just work together to develop and maintain optimum health. Therefore, the patient shall have the responsibility:

  • to provide Student Health Services with information about past illnesses, hospitalizations, medications, and other health matters;
  • to follow medical advice for treatment and accept responsibility for health consequences if advice is not followed;
  • to ask questions if he/she does not understand any directions given by the health practitioner;
  • to keep and be punctual for appointments or telephone Student Health Services at least 2 hours ahead of the appointment if an appointment cannot be kept;
  • to be respectful of others and the property of others while at Student Health Center;
  • to keep cell phones turned off while in Student Health Services;
  • to provide Student ID on request to Student Health Services Staff;
  • to dress appropriately for a public place (e.g., wear shirt, no bare feet); and
  • to abide by Student Health Services rules and regulations.
