PEER MENTORING

"A mentor is a kind of guide who, despite having been far enough to know something of what's down the path, comes back to walk with you, and thus leads without leaving you to follow." (Boyd)

The Peer Mentoring Program seeks to provide a supportive environment for Disability Services students as they make the transition to Old Dominion University by connecting them successfully with a peer guide.

The transition into college life is difficult for students, finding classrooms, understanding university procedures, seeking out resources, and adjusting to a new lifestyle. Students with disabilities have these difficulties, along with unique needs. The office of Disability Services' Peer Mentoring Program is intended to lend extra support by matching new students who have disabilities (mentees) with continuing students (mentors) who have the same interests, major, and/or disabilities.

If you would like to be involved in the program, please contact Christina LiPuma at (757) 683-4655 for more details.

Program Goals

  • To provide Disability Services students with a support system.
  • To encourage students to engage in University activities.
  • To increase communication between Disability Services students and the faculty and staff at Old Dominion University.
