Studying Smarter

If your present study habits aren't giving you the results you want, you probably need to change them! Here are some tips that may help you study more effectively:

  • Approach the academic side of college like it is a real job. Establish a schedule of classes AND schedule time to study.
  • Find a private place to study. The fewer distractions, the better.
  • Make yourself complete assignments - or parts of assignments - every day. Completing a consistent amount of work will keep everything from piling up. You'll find you actually have more time to do the things you want to do.
  • The rule-of-thumb for allotting study time is about 3 hours for each in class meeting. Some classes will require less than this, and others will require more. "Easier" classes (like basket weaving) will probably take about 2 hours per class and more difficult classes (like physics or chemistry) will require about 4 hours per class session.
  • Learn how to read book chapters more effectively.
